Kadıköy: Istanbul's Asian Heart

Ask many Istanbul locals where they'd choose to live, and a significant number will say Kadıköy. This bustling district on the Asian shore of the city offers a compelling mix: a legendary food market, a thriving arts and music scene, beautiful fin-de-siècle architecture, seaside parks, and some of the best eating and drinking in the entire city. It's Istanbul at its most lived-in and loveable.

Getting to Kadıköy

Kadıköy is easy to reach from the European side:

  • Ferry: Regular services from Eminönü, Karaköy, and Beşiktaş — the most scenic option, taking 20–25 minutes
  • Metro: The M4 line connects Kadıköy to Sabiha Gökçen Airport and onwards into Anatolia
  • Marmaray: The undersea rail link stops at nearby Ayrılıkçeşme

Kadıköy Market (Çarşı)

The market area — known simply as Çarşı — is the district's beating heart. A labyrinth of narrow streets and covered passages, it's packed with fishmongers, cheese sellers, spice stalls, delis, greengrocers, and street food vendors. This is one of the best places in Istanbul to experience everyday city life and sample Turkish produce.

Look out for:

  • Mado and other traditional dessert shops along the main market streets
  • Tarihi Kadıköy Balık Pazarı — the historic fish market lane, lined with fish restaurants and meyhanes (traditional taverns)
  • Independent delis and cheese shops offering samples of regional Turkish products

Moda: The Elegant Neighbour

Walking south from the main market area brings you to Moda, one of Istanbul's most charming residential neighbourhoods. Tree-lined streets, Belle Époque apartment buildings, independent cafés, and a wonderful coastal park make it a favourite for Sunday strolling. The Moda waterfront offers sweeping views back across the Bosphorus toward the European skyline.

Food and Drink

Kadıköy punches above its weight for food. The neighbourhood has a strong culture of independent restaurants, meyhanes, and bars — partly owing to its traditionally more secular, cosmopolitan character.

  • Meyhanes: Traditional Turkish taverns serving rakı and meze; the Çarşı area has dozens of excellent options, especially along Güneşlibahçe Sokak
  • Midye dolma: Vendors selling stuffed mussels are ubiquitous here — Kadıköy is considered one of the best places in the city to eat them
  • Breakfast culture: Kadıköy has a thriving brunch scene; look for spots serving the full Turkish kahvaltı spread at weekends
  • Coffee: The neighbourhood has embraced specialty coffee — several well-regarded independent roasters and cafés have set up here

Arts, Music, and Culture

Kadıköy has long been associated with Istanbul's alternative and creative communities. The neighbourhood hosts live music venues, independent cinemas, art galleries, and bookshops. The Süreyya Opera House, a beautifully restored early 20th-century building, stages opera and ballet performances throughout the year.

Street art is woven into the fabric of the neighbourhood — wander through the backstreets around the market area and you'll encounter vivid murals at every turn.

Shopping

Beyond the food market, Kadıköy offers excellent independent shopping. The main pedestrianised streets are lined with vintage clothing stores, record shops, independent bookshops (several English-language titles available), and design boutiques. It's a refreshing contrast to the tourist-focused shopping of the Grand Bazaar area.

Day or Night?

Kadıköy works well at any time. Mornings are ideal for the market and breakfast; afternoons for the Moda waterfront and cafés; evenings for meyhane dining and the bar scene, which runs late into the night, particularly on weekends.
